Now I'm home- listening to Michael Franti and ignoring Max. Training For Le Test
So the wildlands firefighter pack test that I will be taking in two-ish weeks is all-but-running 3 miles with 45 pounds in 45 minutes or less on a trail with little or no grade. (The specs say level, though, so...that's encouraging) It's pass/fail. So far, on the trail I use that has quite alot of grades compared to the trails they use for tests, it has taken me 46 minutes (the first time). Then I took a break for about 3 minutes and did it all over again and it took me 45 minutes. Ish. It might have taken me 43. Six miles with about 50 pounds (Ruth insisted 50 and pulled seniority on me, I -knew- it was 45) in 91 minutes. I'm confused and anxious. Everyone tells me I won't have any problems. In the realm of fabulous news, it's actually snowing. Shhhh. Don't tell. |

Mountain Girl
Today I skiied twelve miles in one of Ridgway's first snow storms- six miles up a county road with a 2,000 foot altitude gain to Elk Meadows and six miles back down. Going down was one big learning experience- I've never skiied on something so consistently downhill with my telemark skis. By the end of the road I was doing joyful tele turns- better with my left leg than right, and completely confident having some speed behind me and a downhill in front of me. I am a good teacher for myself. Now I feel so good- my lungs and body are wiped clean, alive and awake. My mind feels that way, too. My mind feels good at processing but rational and calm. I feel so so good. I didn't know if I could do this sort of thing after 40 hours of sawing, running around mountains and sleeping on the floor. Apparently, it is good for me to work- to be this engaged and alive, I never want to stop. |

Yawn.
So Ari and Krista visited me in Durango yesterday and I hatched this brilliant plan with them that I should go home with them and go back to Durango on Sunday because the bus schedule is obliging. I'm so glad I found a way to get out of Durango on my days off because when I am in Durango I have to spend money on a sleazy motel, food, and bribery like buttons and beads and library sale books and bellydance belts. It feels like I spent a ton of money because I'm only making minimum wage at SYC (plus scholarships) and pretty much burnt through the last of the money I made on my last travels to the northwest. (Namely that plane ticket from Denver to Telluride.) Durango is an asphalt suv truck car city and the sun beats down on it. Everyone else went to Mesa Verde. That was the other thing...They were only going to Mesa Verde until sometime today meaning we would have had to get another room. Plus, I'll be working in Mesa Verde soon, and I've already discovered that I really do like working in a place, building trail, for instance, more than just hiking it. When you are working you have time to really see it. Oh, and I kinda got sick. But I'm better now. Let's just say that unrefridgerated clams for breakfast yesterday was not the best plan. I'm so happy to be home and not sure what to do with myself. There are things I want to do and I'm leaving so soon... I'm looking at the day thinking: Wow, so much time, this is great & wow, so little time, it's going to go so fast once I start the day... I need to be down at the highway at 5 in the morning tomorrow waving down the greyhound bus. Since it's a b stop, they don't know I bought a ticket. Unless I call Grand Junction and tell them....*makes mental note* |

SYC
So I'm in Durango. SYC is like I thought and what I wanted except I am more tan, dirty, independent, exhausted (and hence spacey). Every few days when I go to bed or go off into the woods to take a shit, I cry my eyes out and everything is better. Hearing Ari's voice on my cellphone makes me cry, too. Typing that makes me almost cry. I'll see Ari tomorrow for a few hours and then Paq, Nick, Geoffrey and I (my sleazy motel buddies) are off to Mesa Verde for some partying before work on Sunday. So far we have built a mile or so of fence, built numerous headcut controls (they are mass graves full of wood h posts, basically) and built a few switchbacks (steep ones) of trail on a nameless mountain facing El Diente. We started out at about 10,000 ft and hiked up to about 12,000 to where we started working on the trail. So much more to tell... So far I have managed one letter to Ari and none to anyone else. Zaria, are you with James? I think that is what your post said. I am so happy for you! I want to reach through the screen and hug you. Everyone else on lj seems pretty good. See ya. Love, love, love. |

I want to be in Portland. Wow. Message to writer: Youth Corps isn't Portland. Just so you know. Waldron is also not Portland. I want to miss people without being sad. I want the kind of physical activity that makes everything else Go Away. I want more time here. |
